One more reason not to consider surgery for prostate cancer

Men aged 70 or older had a 1.45-fold greater hazard risk of biochemical recurrence following prostatectomy. Overall survival was lowest for men of this age group who underwent surgery.

"Clinicopathological features of prostate cancer appear to be more aggressive as one ages. We found that men 70 years old or older had worse outcomes with respect to biochemical recurrence-free, prostate cancer specific and overall survival. Implications for screening and treatment recommendations are yet to be defined,"

  1. Hey Curtis, I've read all around your blog, nice job! In 2008, I opted for IGRT, Image Guided Radiation Therapy, regarded as the cutting edge of high dose radiation. Proton therapy is another great option, possibly with even fewer side effects than IGRT, as it supposedly doesn't damage healthy tissue. I also keep a blog at www.TheProstateStorm.blogspot.com and wrote a book about my experience, The Prostate Storm. I touch on many of the same subjects I find here, including DVTs -- I had one before the treatment. Research supports higher incidence of DVTs with the presence of cancer in the body--any cancer.
